In the realm of electric vehicle (EV) heavy-duty transportation solutions, WattEV’s latest and first electric truck charging depot in the U.S. marks the company’s fourth depot and also provides up to 1.2 megawatts of power, which is currently the highest-speed charger available in the nation with solar and battery backup on-site.

Located in Bakersfield, California, the new WattEV charging depot is strategically placed near the intersection of highways CA-99 and CA-65 and will cater to San Joaquin Valley’s agricultural sector and warehousing complexes to the state’s important seaports and inland destinations. With 119 acres of land, the charging depot also represents the world’s first electric truck stop with a micro-grid powered by solar along a battery energy storage system (BESS) and capabilities of megawatt rapid charging (MCS).

Moreover, the charging depot contains 16 dual-cord 360kW chargers, 15 single-cord 240kW CCS chargers, and three MCS 1,200kW rapid chargers that will bring down hours of charging to less than 30 minutes according to WattEV. Also, WattEV CEO Salim Youssefzadeh expresses the innovation to the charging time from the MCS chargers stating, “Reducing the charge time to less than 30 minutes for a 300-mile range will be a game-changer in the adoption of electric trucks.”

Notably, WattEV’s latest charging depot received support from the California Energy Commission, with grant funding of $5 million. In addition, the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has pledged future support to expand the charging depot’s capacity.

Through the usage of solar energy in sustainable energy solutions on U.S. soil, an increasing amount of effort is being materialized with solar energy being “fastest growing and most affordable source of new electricity” according to U.S Department of Energy. With WattEV’s plans for future depots in Fresno, Stockton, and Oakland, the company is charting a course toward new heights of sustainability for the transportation industry as well as for the solar energy sector that benefits all in the EV industry.
